Lexie Thompson is suddenly retiring from the LPGA at the age of 29

Lexi Thompson calls it a golf career at 29.

Thompson announced Tuesday that she plans to retire after the current LPGA season.

Although Thompson is expected to address the media on Tuesday afternoon ahead of Thursday’s US Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania, the reasons behind the surprise decision remain unclear.

This is a contest worthy of notice.

Thompson has been in the public eye since becoming the youngest qualifier for the US Women’s Open in 2007 at the age of 12.

“She’s always had a complicated relationship with stardom; I can’t think of another great player for whom the game has seemed so burdensome. She’ll want to retire.” Alan Shipnuck of the Fire Pit Collective wrote about Thompson.

He has 11 career LPGA Tour wins, including a major — at the 2014 Chevron Championship — and some near misses at other major events.

None more painful than the four-stroke penalty he took at the 2017 Chevron for misplacing a ball and then signing the wrong scorecard.

That mistake forced her into a playoff, which she lost to So Yeon Ryu, costing Thompson second big.

Thompson finished second in the 2022 Women’s PGA Championship and the 2019 US Women’s Open.

Thompson has earned $14 million in his career. According to Golf Digest.

“I’m sad for women’s golf, but happy for Lexi Thompson, who is retiring after this season” tweeted Lisa Cornwell of PGA Tour Live.

“In my time covering the LPGA, no player has made a bigger impact. I miss her kindness there. But most of all, I miss her bowling. What of—King Flusher.”
