A judge in Maryland has been shot in a drive-by, and police are scrambling to find answers about who killed him.
Officials have been sent for the security of other judges in the state as the investigation continues.
Judge Andrew Wilkinson was killed Thursday night in a shooting in the northern Maryland town of Hagerstown. Washington County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies responded to a report of a shooting around 8 p.m., and found Wilkinson suffering from gunshot wounds, the sheriff’s office said.
Judge was taken to a medical facility, where he died, the sheriff’s office said. CNN reached out to the Maryland State Police for more information.
Now, Maryland State Police troopers have been “sent to protect other judges.” CNN affiliate WJLA reported.

The Sheriff’s Office plans to hold a news conference to share more details about the ongoing investigation.

He was a well-liked and respected member of the community with an “infectious smile,” former representative of the Maryland House of Delegates Neil C. Parrott wrote.
“Judge Wilkinson was an exceptional judge and a pillar in our community,” Parott said in a statement. “Tonight’s events are devastating for Washington County, Maryland and our justice system. Judge Wilkinson served faithfully and will be sorely missed.
