Chris Sununu tried and failed to defend his Trump flipflops in an ABC interview

Governor of New Hampshire Chris Sununu Criticized his fellow Republicans last year Donald TrumpRepeating how Trump has brought doom to the GOP and “faced multiple investigations and perpetuated the conspiracy theory that he won the 2020 election,” the governor wrote in June 2023. column.

On Sunday, however, Sununu tried to let bygones be bygones — a rebellion, a possible criminal conviction, and continued election denials be damned.

Sununu joined ABC This week On Sunday, there Moderator George Stephanopoulos He pressed the governor in his face for supporting the twice impeached former president. Sununu, who supported Nikki Haley in the primaries, noted that Trump's rhetoric and actions in January 2021 led to the deadly riot on January 6.

“To me, it's not about him having a Republican administration, Republican secretaries, Republican rules, states' rights first, individual rights first, and a pro-business economy.” Sununu said. “We will not have the culture of cancellation that has permeated America. It's not about Trump with me.

Stephanopoulos countered that argument, noting that Trump, who oversees a Republican administration, would still be president. By standing by his 2021 manifesto, he implied to Sununu that he was supporting a rebel.

“51 percent of America, like George does,” he said.

Elsewhere, Sununu sought to deflect from his previous criticisms of Trump, including his federal charges. He admitted that his support for the impeached former president was more political than personal.

“Look, nobody should be shocked that a Republican governor is supporting a Republican president,” Sununu said.

Eventually, Stephanopoulos had enough of Sununu's indifference to Trump after years of bashing the former president.

“In short, even if the classified documents prove him guilty, you'll still support him as president,” Stephanopoulos began. “Even if you believe he contributed to a rebellion, you support him for president. Even if you believe he lied in the last election, even if he was convicted in the Manhattan case, you support him for president. I mean, the answer to that is yes, right?”

“Yes, me and 51 percent of America,” Sununu replied.

“Governor, thank you for your time,” he said.
