EU accuses Elon Musk’s X of misleading users

European regulators have accused Elon Musk’s X of violating its widespread digital services law.

“Today we publish preliminary findings for the first time under the Digital Services Act,” European Commission senior official Margrethe Vestager said in a statement. Report Friday. “In our view, X does not comply with the DSA in key transparency areas by using dark formats, misleading users, failing to provide adequate ad storage, and blocking access to data for researchers.”

The EU’s executive branch added in the report that the company’s approach to so-called verified accounts was “inconsistent with industry practice and misleading users”. Anyone can subscribe to get “verified” status, “it pointed to evidence of malicious actors abusing the ‘verified account’ to defraud users.”

If the commission’s preliminary findings are upheld, it could fine X before Twitter up to 6% of its annual turnover.
